Audiences at the heart of BBC Wales’s programmes and services during Coronavirus crisis

During these unprecedented times, BBC Cymru Wales has today laid out how it is responding to the changing needs of audiences during the Coronavirus crisis.

Rhodri Talfan Davies, Director BBC Wales, says: “These are challenging times in communities right across Wales and our commitment is to be there for everybody.

“We’ll ensure everybody gets the up-to-date information they so urgently need, we’ll offer a helping hand to thousands of listeners across our radio services and we’ll lift spirits too.

“Recent days have tested us all but the resilience and professionalism of our teams has been remarkable, and I know audiences appreciate their efforts to keep them connected and up to date”.

Public interest in the unfolding story is unprecedented. BBC Wales’ news online service saw 1.3m unique visitors yesterday alone. And so far this week, three quarters of a million viewers have tuned into BBC Wales Today each day across the three main bulletins.

As well as maintaining our vital news services across radio, television and online - drawing on our extensive specialist correspondent teams - BBC Wales has announced a raft of editorial changes to respond to the crisis.

• From Monday, one of the nation’s favourite presenters, Owen Money, will launch a new Golden Hour programme at 10am on BBC Radio Wales - an hour of non-stop feel-good classics. Broadcasting from home, Owen will bring his inimitable warmth and humour to the daily schedule
• Wynne Evans’s show is also launching a brand new strand next week on BBC Radio Wales - The Generation Gap - to connect grandchildren and grandparents who are cut off during the crisis. It’ll use a quiz format to bring families together at such a difficult time
• From today, Post Cyntaf on BBC Radio Cymru will be extended to 9am in order to include an audience phone-in for the first time, giving listeners an opportunity to ask their questions to a panel of experts
• Also on BBC Radio Cymru, Aled Hughes’s programme will have a new daily slot to celebrate the efforts of the volunteers who are going the extra mile in our communities. And the Bore Cothi programme will create a new over 70s club to unite those who are either self-isolating or social distancing
• Both stations will be maintaining their commitment to religious programming, using Skype to enable religious and humanist celebrants to hold virtual faith gatherings
• Both stations are also planning to work in partnership with the Horizons music project to broadcast live music sessions from artists’ front rooms
• BBC iPlayer will see a new, special collection of BBC Wales programmes from across the years - a treasure trove of comedy, great sporting moments, entertainment and music programmes that give us all the chance to escape the headlines for a moment and enjoy
• Tomorrow, the BBC Wales Learning team will be publishing an article for parents and children in Wales outlining how to navigate Bitesize for Wales-specific content alongside the wealth of other content there. And in the days to come there will be additional content to help parents ensure that their children can continue to learn whilst at home
• The BBC Wales Investigates team - all working from home - are busy working on a unique project to capture the personal stories of the Coronavirus pandemic, deploying cameras to families across Wales
• Across both our national stations, we’re planning a brand new Listening Project - to connect communities and families across Wales, and to provide a lasting archive of the stories at the heart of the crisis
• BBC Sesh will play its part too - reflecting the impact that coronavirus is having on young people. There’ll be articles and blogs written by contributors with conditions such as OCD, anxiety and cerebral palsy, who’ll describe the effect it’s having on their lives - as well as helpful tips
