More Lawsuits Filed in City in Southern California Claiming Mold, Moisture and Health Issues in Private Military Housing

LA Testing offers laboratory services, sampling supplies and test kits to identify mold and other indoor environmental quality concerns.

Huntington Beach, CA – WEBWIRE

Three new lawsuits were recently filed in a city in Southern California against a private military housing provider according to a recent article by the  Stars and Stripes . Their report detailed multiple families that alleged that mold, moisture and other conditions in their homes lead to unhealthy living conditions that caused medical problems. The lawsuits included negligence and other complaints against the housing provider.

In a similar case last year, a Marine Corps family also located in Southern California was awarded $2 million in a lawsuit against a private military housing provider. That lawsuit also involved medical claims by the family associated with exposure to mold and excessive dampness in their rental property. A judge in December ruled the award was excessive and is being reviewed.

Mold is a known allergen, irritant and asthma trigger for many people. Some types of mold also produce toxic substances known as mycotoxins. There are also species of mold associated with water damaged buildings that can cause opportunistic infections in people with a weakened or suppressed immune system.

“The key to preventing mold growth indoors is to control humidity levels and quickly deal with any moisture that enters a property through faulty plumbing, building envelop leaks or floods,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Otherwise mold can begin to grow in as short as 48 hours and a small issue can quickly turn into a major problem that could expose building occupants to unhealthy conditions and can be costly to fix.”

The scientists and environmental professionals at LA Testing work to help property owners, landlords and tenants identify water damage, mold and assist with a wide range of indoor environmental quality (IEQ) concerns. Their laboratories in California provide testing services, sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, building inspection tools and air monitoring instruments. Testing is instrumental for locating mold and other indoor air quality issues, especially if it is growing in areas that are out of sight. It is also crucial for assessing an indoor environment after cleanup and remediation of any mold and moisture to help ensure the problem has been fully addressed.
