Bill Buchanan, OBE, of Edinburgh Napier University, Accepts Editor-in-Chief Role at Blockchain in Healthcare Today

The online, peer-review journal Blockchain in Healthcare Today (BHTY), is pleased to welcome Bill Buchanan, OBE, as Editor-in-Chief. “We are honored to have Prof Buchanan aboard,” stated Tory Cenaj, founder and publisher of the journal. “BHTY has broad reach around the globe and we are excited to augment the board with academic leadership from the European continent. Bill is a passionate innovator, leading research in areas cyber security, IoT, cryptography, and digital forensics. This presents a wonderful opportunity for us to build an international team of trail blazers changing health culture around the world with blockchain technology.”

 “We live in a legacy digital world which is almost completely untrustworthy. We must now rebuild it, and put patients and their rights at the core of efforts. The transformation of healthcare must thus be at the top of our research agenda, and how we best move towards capturing, analyzing, and storing data in a trustworthy way. With the usage of cryptography and distributed ledger methods I believe that we can build a world which puts the citizen and their care at the center of our world. I hope this will lead to more effective care, and allow clinical staff and the citizen to work effectively for the betterment of our society.  New economic models also exist, which move away from a paper-based infrastructure - where we can more effectively plan and resource our world of health and well-being. I missed any real involvement in the creation of the Internet, but I now have a chance to influence a future world, and part of this must be peer-reviewed publications and evidence-based research,” stated Bill Buchanan, OBE, journal Editor-in-Chief.

Bill Buchanan, OBE, is Professor at the School of Computing at Edinburgh Napier University, leads the Centre for Distributed Computing, Networks, and Security, and is a Fellow of the BCS, and Principal Fellow of the HEA. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2017 for services to cyber security. In 2018, he received an “Outstanding Contribution to Knowledge Exchange” at the Scottish Knowledge Exchange Awards. One of his most recent achievements is the creation of a Blockpass Identify Lab, which is one of the first identify focused lab in the world.

His current cryptography work around secret shares won several awards, enhancing work around sticky policies and identity-based encryption, which aims to integrate access rights on documents in public cloud systems such as EHR and financial information.  He has one of the most extensive academic sites in the world (asecuritysite.com), and has published over 30 academic books and 280 academic research papers. Along with this he has led research which has led to three highly successful spin-out companies (Zonefox, Symphonic and Cyan Forensics).

Prof Buchanan will serve, alongside Dr. John D. Halamka, as co- Editor in Chief of Blockchain in Healthcare Today. Dr. Halamka is the President of Mayo Clinic Platform. Dr. Halamka, an international innovation and digital health pioneer himself, has served the George W. Bush administration, the Obama administration, and strives to improve healthcare quality, safety, and efficiency for patients, providers, and payers throughout the world, using information technology.
