While attending his fortieth high school class reunion, Dean Collins recounts the events surrounding the controversial romantic relationship between Alec Driver, a talented music teacher, and Tracy Ashbury, a bright, talented and attractive student, in a small Florida coastal town during the 1950s.

Thanks to the G.I. Bill, Alec earns an advanced degree in music from a prestigious university. At age thirty-seven, with glowing recommendations in hand, he secures the post of choir teacher at a small-town high school on Florida’s west coast. Soon after assuming his duties, he falls in love with Tracy, who is one of his students in the choir.

His courtship of Tracy soon outrages the community but influential citizens rescue the beleaguered Alec from a potential dismissal. He eventually marries Tracy and the choir earns national recognition for their mastery. Are Alec’s rescuers vindicated?  it would seem so, but the romance does not end well.

What other stories does Dean share about Alec and Tracy? Why does he bother telling them and how does he feel about telling them? Most important of all, how does Alec and Tracy’s story end?
