The Saving Power of Compassion

The practice of compassion or helping others is interestingly inherent to some people. Matt Moore’s “Helping: It’s What We Do,” published on January 4, 2019, shares unique stories of the power of compassion.
 
These are ten short stories that are totally unconnected but spring from the author’s lifetime of adventures. A defense attorney in El Paso, representing an indigent client in Federal court, refused to accept payment for his services and so provided the title and theme of these stories. He explained, “It’s what we do. We help one another.”
 
The book maintains a fluid vocabulary and detailed descriptions. The local colors used as well as motifs that build up the practice of helping other people without conditions make the stories worthy of discussion. Moore, through his creativity, strengthens the fact that part of people’s genetic make-up is the desire to help humanity. The pictures on the front and back covers were taken nearly one hundred years apart, but each shows a protective older sibling who symbolizes the promise of having a younger sibling’s back always.
 
The themes of grief, insecurity, illness, love, and prejudice form the moral of the stories through compelling characters who struggle with these. But, despite all, readers will be reassured that kindness and generosity will always save the day just because it’s what people do.
 
A well-written book that is accessible to all readers that promises a good read and overwhelms hearts in more ways than one!
