Verizon customers use record amounts of data in Super Bowl LIV


Verizon fans shared Super Bowl LIV’s biggest moments, consuming a record amount of data on the nation’s most awarded network. Super Bowl attendees used 21.5 terabytes of data in and around the stadium -- or enough data to stream a feature-length movie more than 6,000 times -- capturing their favorite moments and sharing them with their friends.

Game day facts 
  • Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network average download speeds outperformed all other 5G networks in Hard Rock Stadium.

  • For the first time in history, a small part of the live broadcast was captured on a 5G Ultra Wideband enabled camera. This 5G camera was shown on TV and the crowd shots that followed were transmitted over Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband wireless network from the camera to the production truck for the live broadcast.
  • On game day, Verizon fans used 21.5 TB of data on the Verizon network in and around the stadium vs. 20.5 TB in 2019, 18.8 TB in 2018 and 11 TB in 2017. Previous years stadiums were able to seat more spectators, so in 2020 fewer attendees used more data.
  • The biggest spikes of wireless data usage occurred during kickoff and the halftime show, driven by social media usage and cloud storage activity (saving photos/videos). 

Verizon staffed a network Command Center 24x7 to ensure the most reliable network experience for fans, first responders and public safety teams.

  • Verizon customers and visitors to Miami will continue to benefit for years to come from the $80 million dollars of permanent network enhancements throughout the city and surrounding areas.
