Behind the Closed Doors and Curtained Windows of Surgical Practice

Dr. Neville Connolly had just started his medical school training at Kings College, Cambridge University when WWII broke out between England and Germany. He chronicles the many changes the war brought about at the University and in everyday life in England. After he graduated Kings College, he accepted a Rockefeller scholarship to go to Harvard Medical school in the USA. He traveled in a convoy of merchant marine ships, with military destroyer protection to cross the Atlantic Ocean. As fate would have it, just as he arrived at Harvard Medical School, Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japan and the USA entered the war.

Despite all the hardships and uncertainties, Neville’s “Calling” never waned. He writes about the many intricacies of a medical practitioner’s life in his autobiographical book: “Called to be a Surgeon: Not for Bread Alone.”
Dr. Neville Connolly was a surgeon who has lived through the changes of medical practice for over half a century. From an altruistic view, borne out of witnessing countless changes in the practice of medicine, he deciphered the structure of current medical treatment for all who are willing to understand. With courage and candor, he armed the people with the information of the current standard of practice of medicine that would help them make an informed decision for their care.

Dr. Connolly describes personal encounters that led him to be who he has become and where he has arrived. Unafraid, he admitted his blunders as well as the moments of success. Without qualms, he tells of how so many physicians of his time rejected new and proved ideas only at the expense of their patients.  He believes that empathy is the most important character trait that physicians need to successfully treat their patients.  In all honesty, he proceeds to take his readers with him on an adventure of faith, happiness, and success. He revealed that a note of gratitude is more fulfilling to him than all the monetary payment in the world.

He believed: “The influences affecting the medical profession over the last 50 years seem to have turned what was once a noble calling into an unfeeling business for too many.” This is an accounting of his life that was both inspiring and challenging. About the Author
Dr. Neville Connolly obtained his medical education and surgery practice both in England and the United States. He did his residency training in England during the inception of the National Health Service and because of the relative lack of specialties in England at that time, his experience in General and Pediatric Surgery was broad ranged and encompassing.
