In “The Numbered Cups Mystery,” Walt Whitlock, a writer with a hard-boiled reputation, dies from apparent poisoning. Lieutenant James happens to be at the scene as he is one of the guests at the barbecue held at the home of Oscar Townsend, the victim’s publisher.

The cups at the barbecue are marked with a number to identify whose is whose. Walt’s #5 cup and one of several #7 cups contain tainted bourbon from a pint bottle that Lucy Trent, Walt’s elderly neighbor, brought to the picnic. Lucy and Oscar happen to argue with Walt before he died but both deny having a hand in his death. Fingerprints from Eileen Forsyth, another guest, are found on the poisoned cup while John Gearity, Walt’s longtime friend, goes missing after the party.
