On Friday 21 February, artist Philip Vermeulen’s sensory installation More Moiré² premières at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam during Sonic Acts Academy. Vermeulen, who awed audiences with previous installations like Boem BOem and Flap Flap, is currently nominated for the prestigious art award de Volkskrant Beeldende Kunstprijs 2020. As well as Vermeulen’s installation, the Stedelijk programme also showcases work and performances by other sound artists.

With More Moiré² Vermeulen explores the dissonance between the experience of incorporeal digitality and material corporeality. Echoing the intent of his earlier projects, this installation also challenges visitors’ senses. Inspired by the work of light artists such as Doug Wheeler and James Turrel, he creates an overwhelming cinematic experience in a panoramic Ganzfeld space. His composed landscapes of light, sound and shifting moiré patterns confound our sensory perceptions. With More Moiré² Vermeulen compels our senses to reset, and amplifies our awareness of our bodily existence. Developed by Vermeulen over the last few months, More Moiré² was jointly commissioned by Sonic Acts and W139. The installation can be seen and experienced at the Stedelijk Museum from 21 to 27 February.

Sonic Acts Academy will be appearing at different locations throughout Amsterdam on 21, 22 and 23 February. The Stedelijk Museum has been partnering with Sonic Acts since 2011, and will be taking part in the programme on Friday 21 February. Alongside Philip Vermeulen the upcoming Academy edition at the Stedelijk Museum spotlights work by sound artists including Anthea Caddy, Sadaf and Maika Garnica.

Sonic Acts Academy is an international festival for audio-visual art and critical perspectives that reflect on our changing planet, spurred by the need to reimagine new collective futures. The festival offers three evenings of experimental concerts, live cinema and progressive club nights, and a two-day conference featuring some of today’s most exciting speakers.
