Author Barksdale’s granddaughter is the inspiration behind this enjoyable children’s literature. Just as she watched her granddaughter fall in love with nature, the author wishes that the young readers of her book will do the same and find love and wonder in their natural environment.
When asked about the appeal of “The Little Woods Runner,” the author replies: “The best aspects of this book are its appeal to family, multicultural in nature and the expertise of my illustrator’s watercolor representations of real photographs. Barksdale is a retired teacher and grandmother who lives in northern Minnesota. She taught elementary school for 25 years and served in the United States Army for 14 years. Her other books include her autobiography, “Nakedness: Covered in Blood,” and a humorous children’s book, “The Butcher, the Bakers, the Community Makers.”
The book’s illustrator, Andra Guzzo, is a practicing artist and teacher in South Dakota. She earned a BA in art and education from Austana University. Guzzo’s works have appeared in galleries and art shows around Sioux Falls, South Dakota. “The Little Woods Runner” is her first book illustration.
