Dozens of Different Packaged Vegetable Products From California Recalled Due to Listeria Concerns

LA Testing provides laboratory services to identify Listeria, E. coli, Salmonella and other microbial pathogens to help prevent foodborne illnesses and costly product recalls.

South Pasadena, CA – WEBWIRE

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) recently posted information about a voluntary recall of a series of vegetable products sold to select retailers in the United States and Canada. The recall was announced by a packing company in Salinas in response to a notification from the FDA and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency of potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

At the time of the FDA notice there were no reports of illnesses from the products being recalled, but according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 260 people die each year in the U.S. alone from listeriosis, the infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes. The infection is most likely to sicken pregnant women and their newborns, adults aged 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems.

“In recent years, Listeria has been linked to various produce and dairy product recalls, but just a few decades ago it was primarily associated with contaminated deli meats and hot dogs,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “The lack of illnesses in this situation is very fortunate as the CDC has stated that Listeria is the third leading cause of death from food poisoning. Even without people becoming sick, the cost to a company involved in any type of food recall can be substantial.”

Dedicated to helping companies and public health officials in their efforts to prevent contaminated foods from reaching the public are the food scientists at LA Testing. With multiple laboratories in California, they offer food testing services to identify a wide range microbial pathogens and chemical contaminants. These services are instrumental for testing raw ingredients and finished products, as well as for evaluating production surfaces and confirming disinfection procedures at processing and manufacturing facilities.
