When a wealthy Christian family was affected by the civil rights movement in the 1950s, it came to light that what society believed and approved may never be always right. Christians seek to follow God to the best of their abilities, but the fact is that in some churches, some of these teachings are not always biblically correct as revealed in Janice Freeman’s book, The Family Secret.”

In her book, the author shares how segregation afflicted a Southern white family and their last three generations and how it greatly affected their younger ones. As the family moved north, where segregation was less, their children were exposed to different races because they attended a Quaker private school. The children of the school were from many nationalities including African Americans. There they learned early how to accept those around them.

“The Family Secret” signifies the deepest and most unwanted blisters and scars the family had experienced about race through their immediate family members, their relatives that lived near them before they left the south. The author also points out that God left people His word to guide them toward the universal truths. However, the reality is that some leaders during that time had accepted religious truths some of which were not always the true teachings of the scriptures. Those interested to learn from the past may purchase copies in selected online bookstores.
