BRF, one of the largest food companies in the world, offers drivers who drive the BR470 in the municipality of Lontras, Santa Catarina, a new tool to increase driver safety and reduce the number of accidents on the highway.

From April to December last year around 350 vehicles passed, totaling more than 1,700 stops through the fulcrum. Located in a strategic point, the space has equipment for physical activities and materials that contribute to the rest of drivers. “Since the start of the Sleep Alert room, we have had no accidents at the most dangerous times and locations on our way to the coast of Santa Catarina,” explains José Perottoni, BRF’s Director of Global Logistics. “For BRF safety is one of the fundamental commitments and this project is part of this strategy,” he says.

Heavy traffic and the stretch of mountains showed a high rate of accidents and, based on the evaluation of these data, the BRF identified that part of them occurred in the early hours and had as one cause sleep. With this, the BRF decided to install the fulcrum for truck drivers, the Sleep Alert room, with light therapy, whose goal is to suppress the production of melatonin, allowing the driver to control drowsiness.

Already this year, from January to September, about 450 vehicles with more than 5,000 stops through the point, to various customers and ports in Santa Catarina. The initiative is a pilot project of the company, which is also studying the installation of two other support points for drivers in Paraná.
