  • Delta is ranked No. 58 on the list of 100, the only passenger airline listed.
  • Honor is driven by anonymous employee survey responses.
  • Diverse, inclusive workplaces are more innovative and resilient, Great Place to Work® says.

Great Place to Work® and Fortune magazine have called out Delta as one of the 2019 Best Workplaces for Diversity, an honor the airline has now earned for four years running. Delta ranked No. 58 on the 2019 list, the only passenger airline to be included.

According to Great Place to Work, the Best Workplaces for Diversity are ones where underrepresented and historically discriminated against people experience their workplace as a great place to work for all and are represented at every level in the organization, including the board.

To determine the list, Great Place to Work analyzed the experiences of women, under-represented races/ethnicities, LGBTQ people, employees who are Boomers or older, and people who have disabilities, comparing their survey results to their colleagues’ results at the same organizations. All told, these anonymous survey responses on more than 60 survey questions reflecting day-to-day workplace treatment represented more than 4.8 million employees’ work lives.

“As we work hard to seek diversity, promote inclusion and hold one another accountable for the necessary steps on this journey, we are humbled that others continue to take note of our progress,” said Keyra Lynn Johnson, Managing Director, Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer. “Delta people at every level have helped advance our diversity and inclusion strategy. It’s a journey, not a destination, so we will always have work to do to become an even better reflection of the world we serve and a model for inclusion. In 2020, we look forward to continued focus in this area – together.”

“Reflecting, respecting, and connecting the world will be key differentiators of our culture - not only as an airline, but as a leading global company,” she added.

Building business value

The Best Workplaces for Diversity stand out for creating great workplaces for all employees, regardless of their personal characteristics. This year Delta CEO Ed Bastian was named one of 15 founding member CEOs of The New York Stock Exchange Board Advisory Council, aimed at advancing diversity in the workplace by using members’ personal networks to connect candidates with companies seeking boardroom leadership. In addition the company’s BRGs are increasingly important and strategic resources for the business as a whole.

Delta also focuses on strategic initiatives through community programs, a robust 20-year supplier diversity program, and internal and external pipelines that aim to remove economic, racial and gender barriers. Delta’s commitment to equity is supported by achieving 100% pay parity and tracking progress toward long term goals of increasing gender and racial diversity. Delta’s senior cross-divisional Diversity & Inclusion Council ensures these goals are embedded throughout the organization by evaluating corporate and divisional metrics, programs and proposals.

“Building great workplaces for all is not only the right thing to do – it’s also a critical way leaders build business value,” said Michael C. Bush, CEO of Great Place to Work. “In our study of nearly 2,000 companies we found that key metrics related to equity and inclusion not only drive stronger company innovation, but also predict whether companies will thrive or stumble during a recession.”

The Best Workplaces for Diversity list is one of a series of rankings by Great Place to Work and Fortune based on anonymous employee feedback from Great Place to Work-Certified™ organizations. Delta’s recent awards include Best Workplaces for Women (No. 67), Best Workplaces for Millennials (#61), and one of 2019’s 100 Best Companies to Work For (No. 97). In addition, Delta was recently certified as a Great Place to Work for the fourth year in a row.
