13/12/2006 : In expressing satisfaction with the outcome of today’s vote on the REACH regulation, Unilever calls for all industry partners to look positively at the proposal and contribute to making it a real success.

Unilever’s goal is to maintain its commitment and proactive engagement in helping the EU institutions with addressing the implementation challenges that lie ahead. Indeed, Unilever supports REACH as a unique opportunity to enhance consumer confidence in products containing chemicals. We believe that in order to achieve this goal, industry still has an active role to play. We want to demonstrate to all stakeholders that they can trust industry in its continued commitment to improving human safety and environmental protection.

“We call all industry partners to look at REACH positively in order to make it a real success, building on its strong points and potential. There is still an expectation in society that industry has a role in demonstrating to all stakeholders that it can be trusted for its commitment in improving consumer safety and environmental protection. Unilever will be in the front line,” said Charles Laroche, Vice President European External Affairs. REACH is an impressive step ahead in the field of chemical management that should not be underestimated.

Unilever is satisfied with the outcome of today’s vote in the European Parliament on the REACH regulation. It marks a critical step forward in the finalization of long discussions aimed at seeking a compromise. We believe that a careful balance between the various positions allowing the system to be workable and successful has been achieved. Unilever would thus like to thank the Members of the European Parliament, the Finnish Presidency, Member States and the EU Commission for their efforts in finding a broad consensus on this critical topic.

We can now expect this agreement to be endorsed in the coming days by the Council of Ministers and soon after enter into force. As it has been the case all along the legislative process, Unilever will remain actively committed to helping the EU institutions with the big challenge of translating the legal text into practical implementation measures. “We will continue providing our unequivocal and committed support in helping to make REACH a real success,” added Mr. Laroche.
