Eurosport becomes official Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 broadcaster in France

Paris – WEBWIRE

Eurosport has announced that it has complemented its position as Home of the Olympics in Europe by becoming an Official Broadcaster of Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 in France. This addition expands Eurosport’s Olympic Games footprint to 50 markets and territories for the upcoming Summer edition.

Already Home of the Olympics throughout Europe for Tokyo 2020, the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 and Olympic Games Paris 2024, Discovery has agreed a partnership with the CANAL+ Group and France Télévisions, to secure the exclusive pay-TV rights for Tokyo 2020 across Eurosport’s linear and digital streaming services. France Télévisions will remain the official free-to-air broadcaster for Tokyo 2020.

Eurosport will now begin its Olympic Games journey in France and build upon Discovery’s award-winning, record breaking Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018. For Tokyo 2020, fans will be able to enjoy Eurosport’s unrivalled sports expertise and unique analysis, delivered by most extensive line up of experts and new immersive technology.

Andrew Georgiou, President, Eurosport and Global Sports Rights & Sports Marketing Solutions, said: “As the Home of the Olympics across Europe, we are delighted to complete our Olympic Games offering by bringing Eurosport’s comprehensive, localized and all-screen coverage to fans in France.

“Eurosport will take consumers and partners on every step of the Olympic Games journey, presenting the ultimate Olympics experience with every minute of Paris 2024, Beijing 2022 and now adding Tokyo 2020 in France. We look forward to the new opportunities Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will provide for our partners and business in France,” he added.

In a separate agreement announced earlier this year, France Télévisions will sub-license (from Discovery) exclusive free-to-air audio-visual rights to the 2022 and 2024 editions of the Olympic Games. As Home of the Olympics in Europe, Eurosport will offer fans every moment of the Olympics, featuring dedicated streams covering every sport, every event and every gold medal.

Discovery’s long-term partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) which was announced in June 2015, included exclusive multimedia rights in Europe*, beginning with the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018. These exclusive rights awarded to Discovery in France included 2022 and 2024, with 2018 and 2020 having previously been awarded to France Télévisions.

* 50 markets and territories. Excludes Russia. Eurosport will be an Official Broadcaster in the France and the UK in 2020.
