Thai Union participates in Dialogue on Ethical Recruitment in South East Asia

BANGKOK – WEBWIRE

Thai Union Group PCL’s Global Director of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability, Dr. Darian McBain has urged companies to adopt a more robust approach to ethical recruitment, arguing it is critical in tackling modern slavery.

Addressing the 2019 Issara Global Forum, McBain said while implementing an ethical recruitment policy was challenging, it was necessary to reduce the debt burden that can lead to modern slavery.

“Thai Union operates in a very complex and challenging industry, but when we introduced our Ethical Migrant Recruitment Policy we did so with a goal of providing an environment where all our workers were employed in safe, legal and freely-chosen employment,” McBain said. “We seek to demonstrate what can be achieved if you have the determination and commitment, because if you do nothing then modern slavery will continue to flourish and remain hidden from view.”

Under Thai Union’s global sustainability strategy, SeaChange®, safe and legal labor is a key pillar. Thai Union introduced its Ethical Migrant Recruitment Policy in 2016, which included the elimination of recruitment fees for all those employed in the company’s factories and processing plants. The policy aims to protect workers and reduce the risk of labor exploitation.

An independent evaluation from ethical trade consultancy Impactt, released earlier this month, found that Thai Union’s recruitment policy was a “significant landmark in improving migrant recruitment practices.”

The report, which was published following a six-month evaluation of the policy commissioned by Humanity United and The Freedom Fund, said Thai Union’s policy was an example for other companies to follow in achieving similar outcomes.
