Retired Naval Officer Creates Historic Legacy in His New Memoir
Admiral Albert L. Kelln (Retired) relates the ups and downs of serving in the US Navy
In his book, “Living the MIRACLES, A Sailor’s Life in the Nuclear Power Age,” the author shares his experiences during a unique time of change in American naval history––that of the transition from diesel to nuclear power.
Albert Kelln was motivated to become a Naval Officer in the early 1950s, at which time he got selected and trained to become a Naval Reactor Operator.
Kelln tells of his voyages on submarine USS Skate to the Arctic Ocean. Kelln is additionally acknowledged to be the first person to fly over, stand at, and sail under the ice at the North Pole.
In his memoir, the author narrates with some humor his poignant encounters with John Eisenhower (the President’s son), the Queen of Greece, and some ruffians who were at Holy Loch, Scotland.
As an experienced submariner, Kelln served on the construction and subsequent operation of four nuclear submarines. He commanded the USS Ray SSN 653, which received high acclaim in the devising and operation of new unique capabilities.
Also, Admiral Rickover assigned Kelln to be the Chief Engineer of the nuclear-powered Aircraft Carrier CVAN Enterprise during its operation in the Mediterranean Sea, as well as an unsupported voyage around the world.
The Navy promoted Kelln to Rear Admiral six years before his peers. After his retirement from the Navy, he founded the Naval Submarine League and several major Christian-oriented groups, including an ongoing Christian Pregnancy Center, to save the lives of unborn babies. He and his wife, Cecily, live in Llano, Texas, and continue their Christian ministries.
