A Preview of Macedonia

Books can take readers to unfamiliar places. Through the settings of the stories, readers also get to learn about the people and the culture surrounding them. Rea-Silvia Costin takes readers on such a journey in “Thiana.”
 
Costin’s book is set in various locations. It begins in Avdela, a remote mountain village in northwestern Greece. It then travels to Salonika and Romania. Readers can picture out the vivid northwestern Greek scenery as they flip the book’s pages.
 
The plot revolves around three generations of strong women within Costin’s family. These three women are Costin herself; her mother, Thiana; and her grandmother, Calliope. While each woman’s life struggles are talked about, the book emphasizes Costin’s and Thiana’s stories more.
 
Macedonian language and culture is shown through the narrative and settings. The tribe’s nomadic nature and need for constant and continuous change are reflected in the characters. Costin hopes her story and characters can inspire people to address their troubles directly and learn from them as they seek better lives for themselves and everyone around them.

Rea-Silvia Costin, PE, is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers. Aside from her engineering profession, the Costin Engineering, Inc. owner has kept herself busy through writing. The International Library of Poetry named her a Poet Laureate in 2002.
