WEEKLY UPDATE ON “REINA DE LA CANCIÓN,” UNIVISION’S POPULAR MUSIC COMPETITION

WHAT’S NEW:

“El Big Boss” himself, Daddy Yankee, returns to “Reina de la Canción” for the 8th Gala and final stretch of the popular music competition. In the show’s opening, the charismatic host Alejandra Espinoza will reveal which of last week’s nominees, Giselle Amelunge and Melaner Quiroz, will remain on the race to become the next Latin music superstar.

During the show, the top 8 contestants will have two rounds of performances. First, they will be pitted against each other in a duel round, followed by their solo act, where, as part of this week’s DY Challenge, they will reimagine some of the unforgettable performances in the history of Univision’s Music Award shows. Also, this week the contestants met with Leila Cobo, Billboard’s vice president/ Latin industry lead, and the recognized publicist Mayna Nevarez, founder and CEO of Nevarez Communications, who granted them a masterclass in entertainment PR which prepared them for an ensuing one-on-one interview with Univision Noticias award-winning journalist María Antonieta Collins.

ON LAST SUNDAY’S SHOW:

  • The seventh gala of “Reina de la Canción” opened with the results of the audience’s vote and Jessica Núñez was sent home.
  • Regional Mexican music star El Dasa joined the show’s expert panel of judges which includes urban and Latin pop singer Natti Natasha, regional Mexican singer-songwriter Joss Favela and iconic tropical music superstar, Olga Tañón.
  • Worldwide sensation, co-host and Casa Estudio director Pedro Capó perfomed “Como lo Hiciste Ayer” alongside reggaeton singer Reykon, for the first time on U.S. television.
  • “Reina de la Canción” Top 10 took their performances to the next level by incorporating interactive elements to their show.
  • After Daddy Yankee saved the two nominees in show 6, the judges had to eliminate a second contestant, and the chosen one was Virginia Stille. At the end of the show, Giselle Amelunge and Melaner Quiroz ended up in the bottom two, placing them in elimination zone for Gala 8.

Viewers will be able to vote for their favorite contestant at Univision.com/conecta and via phone or text message. Fans will have a total of 10 votes per voting channel for a total of 30 votes for their favorite contestant. Voting will open for 24 hours starting at 10 p.m. ET following each show.
