“The points of my book are to educate people about the biggest genocide in Europe after Hitler… (and) to open their eyes to not be brainwashed with political and mass media propaganda.” Dee Plecic

The memoir “On the Margin of the Sky” (2018) by Dee Plecic provides a unique and highly personal perspective on the refugee experience – and a harrowing picture of the Yugoslav Wars. As much as the book tells an amazing story of courage, endurance, and perseverance, it also serves as a stark reminder of how multiculturalism and tolerance could be replaced by racism and political, ethnic and religious tyranny.

Plecic, a Catholic married to a Muslim fanatic, details from her life during Siege of Sarajevo: timing her rush to work to avoid artillery and bombing attacks, scraping enough food for her family and others, maintaining some semblances of normality through music, and raising her children amid the war and chaos. She also narrates the background and causes of the conflict, both from her own perspective and from careful research into recent history on the subject.

The author’s journey continues with her escape to the United States, where she eventually became a citizen. Despite having lived in peace and beauty in Florida, Plecic could never forget the horrors of ethnic cleansing in her homeland. However, on her return visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina years later, she recognized a new problem that is poisoning her people: Islamic fundamentalism (in the form of Wahhabism) imported from Saudi Arabia.
