Is Growing Up Really All That Great?

It’s not uncommon for most youths to have trouble treading adolescence. Not only do they deal with the physical, they start to manifest psychological and emotional changes as well. Accountant-turned-author Gerald L. Nardella’s “Playing Hurt” is one couple’s coming-of-age story marred with trials.
 
Set during the 1960s, Nardella’s novel centers on teenage couple Brian and Deanie’s problems. Following an injury at his final high school football game and a violent postgame skirmish, Brian’s heart and mind is preoccupied with more pressing things—his future outside his small hometown and his relationship with girlfriend Deanie are two of those.
 
Deanie has her own trouble to deal with, as her ex-boyfriend Bill returns. Things take a turn for the worse as Bill forces himself on her and gets her pregnant. From that point on, Brian and Deanie’s lives are put through a test.
 
The novel was inspired by Nardella’s experiences growing up in a small town, with little opportunities and few role models.  Although purely a work of fiction, readers can nonetheless relate to the dilemma the characters face.
 
“Playing Hurt” shows how emotionally hard adolescence can get, especially in the wake of life-changing circumstances. Copies of the coming-of-age novel are sold in selected online bookstores.

Livingston, Montana, native Gerald L. Nardella once served in the US Army. The Montana State University graduate worked for a national accounting firm before starting his own in 1974. He and his wife, Peggy, currently reside in Billings, Montana.
