Asbestos, arsenic, formaldehyde, diesel exhaust, and some forms of silica and chromium are just a few of the airborne carcinogens that the public and workers may be exposed to on a regular basis.

Lung Cancer Awareness Month begins this Friday and runs the entire month of November. This time of recognition is acknowledged in most countries across the globe and is meant to be an opportunity to raise awareness and engagement in the fight against lung cancer. It is also the ideal opportunity to educate the public and workers about things they can do to minimize their chances of getting the disease by avoiding exposure to known airborne carcinogens.

This is all the more important as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that more men and women in the United States die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), last year lung cancer tied with breast cancer for the most common forms of cancer worldwide, but lung cancer still topped the agency’s list for the most common cause of cancer deaths.

Cigarette smoking continues to be the number one cause of lung cancer, but it can also be caused by using other types of tobacco, breathing secondhand smoke, being exposed to substances such as asbestos or radon at home or work, and having a family history of lung cancer. In addition to these exposure risks, there are numerous other known carcinogens that may be present in indoor environments or at worksites in the form of gases, dusts or fumes.

“Asbestos, arsenic, formaldehyde, diesel exhaust, and some forms of silica and chromium are just a few of the airborne carcinogens that the public and workers may be exposed to on a regular basis,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “In Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean, the industrial hygiene, building science and indoor air quality professionals at Zimmetry have the tools and expertise to identify these and other airborne carcinogens, pollutants and respiratory irritants. If a hazard is identified, our specialists can provide help with the necessary steps that need to be taken to mitigate or eliminate exposure risks.”
