Don’t miss Earl Robert Key’s powerful novel at the 2019 Guadalajara International Book Fair.

Avid readers of black literature should watch out for the public display of Earl Robert Key’s coming-of-age novel “Strong Boy, Weak Man” (ReadersMagnet; 2019) at the 2019 Guadalajara International Book Fair from November 30 to December 8, 2019, at the Exhibition Center Expo Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.

Otherwise known as the FIL (from its Spanish name Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara), the nine-day book fair is the second largest book fair in the world. As the most important publishing event in the Spanish-speaking world, the FIL offers authors, publishers, booksellers, distributors, rights agents, and other book industry professionals the chance to break into the Latin American market.

Key’s book “Strong Boy, Weak Man” will be displayed by ReadersMagnet at the 2019 Guadalajara International Book Fair.

The novel narrates the tale of Michael DeAngelo Nicholas (called Mike in the book) who “gave up his first love, his best friend, and his father to do the right thing.” Thirteen-year-old Mike dreams of becoming a boxer but also tries his hands at becoming a barber and shoe shiner. Despite struggling with learning difficulties, he takes his studies seriously alongside playing football.

Mike then learns about his father’s infidelity, so he takes it upon himself to become the breadwinner for his family. At age nineteen, he moves to Memphis, where he would take his family later. As he strives to carve his place in the world and improve his life economically, Mike has to deal with his personal demons, as well as the challenges of adulthood.

“Strong Boy, Weak Man” has been well received by book review publications for its positive message of perseverance and resilience and highlighting the challenges of African-American youth amid racism and poverty. Indeed, the novel harkens to the civil rights struggles in the 1960s and 1970s.
