Author and retired forester and conservationist  Dennis Tavares teams up with Author Capital LLC to inculcate his knowledge about sustaining forest and fishing communities. Considering the sheer environmental struggles that the world faces today, Tavares’ basic guide book for conservationists, How Mendocino County Went to Pot,” becomes a more important read than ever.

“My purpose in writing the book ‘How Mendocino County Went To Pot’ was to record historical details which shed light on the vast difference between what people wanted to happen and what actually happened,” states Tavares. “The difference for both forest products and fishing industries was major, and the town lost 400+ jobs and the infrastructure to process its natural resources. It is a story of business socializing costs and privatizing profits, of government regulators trying to protect the natural environment but not the economic environment, and poorly educated counterculture people who thought they knew more about the situation than the people doing the work. Thus, it is a cautionary tale for small resource towns and society at large.”

This anecdotal account details the event of how the forest product and fishing industries failed in the 1900. Moreover, Tavares points out the errors of actions that shaped the fate of modern conservation in the hopes of breaking the pattern of failure in the past. “How Mendocino County Went to Pot” is the perfect tool to aid in the development of sustainable communities.

About the Author
The author is a retired forester and conservationist who studied forest science at the University of California at Berkeley and subsequently made his home on the Mendocino Redwood Coast. This is his true story of the effort to establish a sustainable forest and fishing community in western Mendocino County. The author was witness to almost all the important events which created the growth of forest empires, a big fishing fleet, and which unfortunately came to naught as the best laid plans of men went haywire.
