Macedonians are a group of people that are fiercely proud of their heritage, their language, their customs, unafraid of changes, constantly on the move. Their need for such is connected with their wish for better lives for themselves and their loved ones. This is reflected in Rea-Silvia Costin’s book, Thiana.”
The book is the first one of a three-part series. It talks about the experiences of three generations of strong women within the author’s family: her grandmother, Calliope; her mother, Thiana; and Costin herself. Each woman’s struggles with adversity are shown. For this book, the focus is on the titular heroine, Thiana, and Calliope.
Its setting changes locations several times; it starts off in a remote northwestern Greek mountain village, AVDELA, and moves on to Salonika and Romania.
Readers will get to know Macedonian customs and language through the book’s setting and Costin’s narrative.  Its main takeaway is the overall growth one can experience in the midst of adversities. Through sharing her mother’s and grandmother’s stories, Costin’s hope for her book is that anyone reading it will be inspired to stay strong in their struggles.
“Thiana” shows that obstacles can and indeed be overcome. Interested readers can buy copies of Costin’s book in selected online bookstores.
