The Met to Honor Jonathan L. Mechanic at 2019 Real Estate Council Benefit

Jonathan L. Mechanic, Chairman of the Real Estate Department at the international law firm Fried, Frank, Shriver, Harris & Jacobson LLP, will be honored at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 24th annual Real Estate Council Benefit. The program for the event—which will take place at the Museum on November 7, 2019, 6:30–9:30 p.m.—includes an exhibition viewing, cocktails, and dinner. Annually, the Benefit raises more than $2 million to support the Museum’s educational mission. The co-chairs of the 2019 Benefit Committee are Bruce A. Beal, Jr., Jeff T. Blau, Daniel Brodsky, Ric Clark, William C. Rudin, and Alan H. Wiener. All are former honorees.

As Chairman of Fried Frank’s Real Estate Department, Mr. Mechanic routinely counsels developers, owners, investors, REITs, and lenders in all aspects of commercial real estate transactions.

Mr. Mechanic has taught the real estate transactions course at Harvard Law School for more than ten years. He also lectures regularly for NYU Law School, the Real Estate Board of New York and the Practising Law Institute, and is a co-author of The Commercial Office Lease Handbook published by the American Bar Association.

Mr. Mechanic is a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors for the Real Estate Board of New York and of the Board of Trustees of NYU Law School. He serves as Chairman of the Advisory Board of the NYU Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy, and is a member of the Advisory Board of the NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate, the Industrial Advisory Board for the Columbia University Center for Urban Real Estate, and the American College of Real Estate Lawyers. 

Mr. Mechanic was awarded the 2016 Distinguished Alumnus Award from New York University and the 2016 Chambers USA Outstanding Contribution to the Legal Profession Award, which highlighted his work on tens of billions of dollars in property deals and praised his support of the ongoing development of the real estate market. For a decade, Mr. Mechanic has been consistently recognized by Chambers USA as a “Star Individual” in real estate and is consistently included on Commercial Observer’s “Power 100” list of the most powerful people in New York real estate. He also received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from New York University in 2016.

The Real Estate Council was created in 1981 to promote and maintain industry involvement with The Met. The annual tradition of saluting members of the real estate and construction community for their commitment and generosity to cultural organizations such as The Met was established at the council’s inaugural gala in 1996.
