“Rose stood up and angrily blurted out, “Aaron killed my dad. He needs to go to prison. He killed my dad.” She covered her face with her hands as she sobbed”.

Themes like forgiveness and healing are very unique and inspiring at the same time, and they can be found in Christian writer Doreen Hatton’s novel “Then Sings My Soul.” Released by Christian Faith Publishing in 2018, Hatton’s touching book will be unveiled at the 2019 National Council of Teachers of English.

The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) devotes itself to improve teaching and learning of English and the language of arts at all levels of education. It promotes the development of literacy, the use of language to construct personal and public worlds and to achieve full participation in society, through the learning and teaching of English and the related arts and sciences of language. The Council was formed primarily out of protest against overly-specific college entrance requirements and the effects they were having on high school English education.

Consequently, the unveiling of Hatton’s book at the Council is also well-timed. “Then Sings My Soul” tells the story of the Langston family. The family grieves of the death of Samuel Langston who got killed by a car when he crossed the street to his home one night. The car was driven by Aaron Turner who is fifteen years old and holds only a learner’s permit. The teenager is incarcerated at a juvenile detention because of the terrible mishap. However, Lily Langston, the wife of Samuel, believes in the power of forgiveness so she and her family convinces the court to give Aaron probation and community service.

Yet one of Lily’s daughters, Rose, cannot forgive Aaron and is furious that the lad isn’t going to jail or paying for killing her father. Can Rose eventually forgive Aaron? Or will she remain resentful against him?
