Mold Exposure Concerns Cause Students and Teachers to Move from Elementary School in Northern California

LA Testing provides analytical services, sampling supplies, test kits and monitoring instruments to identify mold and other indoor contaminants.

Huntington Beach, CA – WEBWIRE

Students and teachers from an elementary school in Northern California had their classes moved from their school building to several nearby schools earlier this year. According to an article from the Daily News, the temporary relocation happened after mold was discovered in the historic school building that was undergoing renovations as part of a modernization program.

Even relatively minor water damage or elevated humidity levels can result in mold growth on many building materials and furnishing in a short period of time. Unfortunately, remediating mold from a building can be costly and needs to be handled properly to prevent creating additional indoor air quality (IAQ) concerns or the mold will simply return in the future.

“Exposure to mold can cause a wide variety of health concerns and is certainly not conducive to a productive learning environment,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Mold is known to produce allergens, irritants, and in some cases, potentially toxic substances known as mycotoxins. Inhaling and touching mold may cause an allergic reaction in some sensitive individuals and it is also a known asthma trigger for many with the condition.”

School administrators, teachers and parents concerned about mold in their schools can turn to California’s LA Testing. With multiple laboratories in the state, LA Testing offers a wide range of mold and other indoor environmental quality (IEQ) testing services. Air and surface testing can help to identify mold issues so that corrective actions can be implemented and is also vital after mold remediation takes place to confirm that it was properly removed. LA Testing also provides all of the sampling supplies needed, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments and building inspection tools.
