The Board of Directors of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) announced that Christine O. (Cooky) Menias, M.D., will become editor of RadioGraphics in January 2021. Dr. Menias, who will be the journal’s first female editor, succeeds Jeffrey S. Klein, M.D., who has held the editor position since 2012. Dr. Klein is the RSNA board liaison for publications and communications and will step down as editor of RadioGraphics at the end of 2020.

“Dr. Menias is one of the leading educators and authorities in our specialty,” Dr. Klein said. “The RSNA Board and our publications group are excited to work with her on the continued growth and evolution of our society’s journal for continuing medical education.”

Dr. Menias is professor of radiology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, Arizona, as well as a consultant in the Department of Radiology, and chair of the Division of Abdominal Imaging. Prior to joining Mayo Clinic in 2013, she was a professor of radiology, co-director of Body Computed Tomography and Emergency Radiology, and the assistant residency program director of radiology at Washington University’s Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, in St. Louis, where she currently holds an adjunct professorship.

“I’m both honored and humbled to serve as editor of our specialty’s leading educational publication,” Dr. Menias said. “RadioGraphics will continue to meet radiology’s need for increasingly accessible, up-to-the-minute educational opportunities to benefit our readers and the patients they serve. I can promise that I will ensure that the journal will maintain its focus on clinically relevant radiology education as we embrace all of the exciting innovation promised by our increasingly digital future.”

Born in Cairo, Egypt, Dr. Menias received her medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine and completed her residency and abdominal imaging fellowship at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology. She is a recognized leader and a prominent and passionate educator in abdominal imaging with special interests in oncologic, transplant, gynecologic and emergency radiology.

Dr. Menias is internationally recognized for her contributions to the field of abdominal radiology and oncologic imaging. She has published six books, multiple book chapters and more than 250 peer-reviewed publications. She serves on the editorial board of RadioGraphics, where she is the editorial board chair for abdominal imaging. Dr. Menias also serves as a member of the RadioGraphics abdominal imaging and resident-fellow panels. She is the associate editor of gynecologic imaging for Abdominal Radiology.

Among Dr. Menias’ many awards and honors are numerous “Teacher of the Year” awards from both Washington University and Mayo Clinic, and most recently the Distinguished Educator Award from the American Roentgen Ray Society. Also recognized for her clinical excellence, Dr. Menias was named the Distinguished Clinician of the Year from Mayo Clinic, Ariz., in 2018. For the past five years, Dr. Menias has been a recipient of the RSNA Honored Educator Award, which is presented to individuals invested in furthering the profession of radiology by delivering high-quality educational content in their field of study.

Dr. Menias is the chair of the RSNA Education Exhibits Committee and chair of the RSNA Education Council’s Subcommittee on Unauthorized Use of Content.
