Delhaize has the most bicycles in Belgium

WEBWIRE

With a total of more than 2,300 company bicycles in use by associates, Delhaize offers the most bicycles of any company in Belgium, as part of its commitment to reduce the company’s global CO2 emissions. Since most store associates live within a radius of five kilometers around the store, Delhaize offers them free bikes to drive to and from work in a more sustainable way.

Associates in the stores, distribution centers and the head office can request a free company bicycle if at least 60% of their commuter traffic is done by bicycle – a conventional bicycle for commutes under 10 kilometers and electric for longer trips. They also receive the accessories that help them move safely and protected on public roads (fluorescent jacket, rain vest, pump, etc.).

Delhaize wants to be CO2 neutral by 2021; since more people on bicycles means fewer cars on the road and less CO2 emissions, this initiative, which started as a pilot project in 2012, contributes to their goal. Exercise is also part of a healthier lifestyle, with studies showing the stress level of bicycling commuters is much lower.

The concept of company bicycles is part of Delhaize’s integrated approach aimed at creating the greatest possible impact, both through associate and company activities. Delhaize also supports carpooling and is constantly looking to make transport more efficient and sustainable. For example, Delhaize uses double-deck trailers, low-noise night journeys, transport by train and water, and tests, among other things, delivery to its Brussels city shops by bicycle.
