The World Economic Forum announces the Co-Chairs of the Sustainable Development Impact Summit 2019, which will take place in New York, 23-24 September.

The Sustainable Development Impact Summit is the Forum’s annual meeting dedicated to solving challenges related to global development. This year’s meeting comes at a critical time for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as progress is falling behind due to persistent inequality and degradation of the planet through climate change and biodiversity loss.

The Forum’s platform for public-private cooperation aims to build partnerships, based around innovative models and uses of technology, that can be scaled up to have a material impact on progress towards the SDGs. Initiatives that will either be launched or taken forward at this year’s meeting include action on carbon emissions, protecting nature, investing in the humanitarian system, ending the digital divide, scaling up batteries and energy storage.

“We cannot fix the problems our world faces if we look at inequality, climate change or loss of biodiversity in isolation. Only a systemic approach focused on restoring equilibrium across all societies and ecosystems can restore a sustainable future for our planet. This can only be achieved through all stakeholders - governments, business and civil society – working together,” said Dominic Waughray, Managing Director and Member of the Managing Board at the World Economic Forum.

This year’s meeting will convene more than 800 global and regional leaders from government, business, civil society and academia. The meeting will explore four themes: transforming markets; accelerating climate action; financing sustainable development; and mobilizing action for inclusive societies.

The Co-Chairs, who help shape the agenda of the meeting, are:

  • Jesper Brodin, Chief Executive Officer and President, Ingka Group (IKEA Retail, Ingka Centres, Ingka Investments)
  • Sebastián Piñera Echenique, President of Chile
  • Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of the Netherlands
  • Gillian Tans, Chairwoman, Booking.com
  • Melati Wijsen, Co-Founder, Bye Bye Plastic Bags

As the Forum’s annual meeting focused solely on sustainable development, the 2019 summit will explore solutions to address environmental and societal crises and advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by leveraging public-private cooperation, systems thinking and the technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
