Two Valley of the Sun Authors - Clive Cussler and Kris Tualla - inducted into the Colorado Authors Hall of Fame

Valley Residents Clive Cussler and Kris Tualla are two of the sixteen living authors inducted into the inaugural class of the Colorado Authors Hall of Fame, along with such notable names as Stephen King, Madeleine Albright, and Jerry Jenkins. The induction ceremony will be held in Denver, Colorado on September 14, 2019.
 
Cussler, who spends half his time in Colorado and half in Arizona, began writing novels in 1965, and published the first book featuring his series hero, Dirk Pitt®, in 1973. To date he’s penned over 70 novels, published in more than 40 languages in more than 100 countries.
 
Glendale, Arizona resident Tualla began writing in 2006 and has 27 published historical novels featuring characters placed in points of unique history. She is being inducted for her World War II trilogy about the US Army’s elite skiing soldiers, the 10^th Mountain Division and the 99^th Battalion, who trained at Colorado’s Camp Hale in the Rocky Mountains (1942-1945).
 
“I am surprised that no one else has novelized these amazing soldiers,” Tualla says. “But in the 77 years since Camp Hale was built, mine are the only stories written which highlight their incredible exploits.”
 
To get the historical details correct, Tualla worked with experts: Colonel Thomas Duhs, USMC, Ret., the country’s foremost authority on the 10^th Mountain division, and Lt. Colonel Erik Brun, US Army, Ret. whose father served in the 99^th Battalion.
 
“Because the books are fiction, we were able to combine multiple soldiers’ experiences into single characters,” Tualla explains. “That enabled me to cover more of what these heroic guys accomplished.”
 
Though unfamiliar to most Americans, this bit of World War II history might not remain unheralded for long. 2020 marks the 75^th anniversary of the end of the war, and Tualla’s parallel stories about the 10^th Mountain Division – “Sempre Avanti: Always Forward” and “Ice and Granite” – have been optioned for a screen project.
