CommonWealth One Gives Back to Animals, Youth and Adults in the Community

Alexandria, VA – WEBWIRE

Throughout the year, CommonWealth One Federal Credit Union embraces the credit union movement and its “people helping people” mission.

This summer was especially busy for CommonWealth One, as it helped children, adults and even animals in the community.

At CommonWealth One’s free Shred Day event this spring, in addition to helping Alexandria and Harrisonburg residents protect themselves from identity theft, the Alexandria branch collected donations for the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. From food to toys, CommonWealth One members donated to animals in need.

CommonWealth One encouraged youth to save for their dreams with the “Picture Your Future” contest. Students from Kindergarten through 12th grade were encouraged to draw a picture or create a story envisioning their future. The winners received donations from CommonWealth One of up to $100 in their youth share savings account. Throughout the summer, the credit union also sponsored a Summer Reading Challenge, encouraging students to read money-themed books during the summer and earn cash for their savings account.

Because we believe in education to reach those dreamy futures, this summer CommonWealth One awarded $12,000 in scholarships to students in Harrisonburg and Alexandria to put toward their college education. In addition, CommonWealth One’s branches collected school supplies including backpacks, notebooks, pens and pencils, folders and much more to help students succeed this school year.

CommonWealth One gave back to several adults, too, this summer! As part of the credit union’s 75th anniversary celebration in August, one lucky member won $750 — $375 to keep for themselves, and $375 to donate to a charity of their choice. The winner, Veronica S., chose to donate to the Fund for Alexandria’s Child. In July, the credit union awarded a $750 Lowe’s gift card to Patricia M. to help her finance her home renovation dreams.

CommonWealth One will continue to give back throughout the fall and winter, too, with plans for a winter coat drive and much more. Be sure to check cofcu.org for opportunities to team up with us as we continue our mission of “people helping people.”
