National Preparedness Month Reminds Businesses and Institutions in Puerto Rico to Make Emergency Contingency Plans

In 2004, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) designated September as National Preparedness Month (NPM). The annual event encourages people across the United States to take steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, institutions and communities. The theme for this year’s NPM is Prepared, Not Scared. Be Ready for Disasters.
 
Emergency preparedness requires attention to not just specific types of hazards, but also to steps that increase preparedness for any type of hazard. National Preparedness Month encourages all segments of society to be ready in the event of a natural or manmade disaster. Being prepared is especially crucial for businesses since according to information posted by Ready.gov several years ago, up to 40% of businesses affected by a natural or human-caused disaster do not reopen.
 
“Companies and institutions that have not planned for a disaster can experience devastating results,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental.  “National Preparedness Month is a reminder for those in leadership positions who have yet to develop a disaster plan to put one in place. This is especially important in places like Puerto Rico and neighboring islands throughout the Caribbean that have been so severely impacted by hurricanes in recent years.”
