This was a marvelous story, and I am so looking forward to a sequel. There are so few stories that tell what it was like for lgbt couples at a time when love needed to be hidden. The characters and their experiences were compelling with beauty, strength and courage. The author’s insight and story-telling skills are phenomenal! - Amazon Review

There is an overwhelming culture of shock value, in much of the literary landscape of LGBTQ stories and its side snippets. With Martha Emily Bellinger’s, “The Two Ruths” however, we get authenticity, and a marvel of pride at how far the marginal community has come and survived with the changing times.

Gleaned from the true stories of women the author knew as an adolescent, “The Two Ruths” tells the story of two similarly named women who meet through family members. Ruthie, as one of them is called, runs a dairy farm and needs caretaker assistance for her mother. The other Ruth needs employment. They strike up a friendship, form a relationship, founded  according to their deep-rooted values in family, God-centeredness, love, respect, and kindness all around.

This solid foundation enabled the women to stay together in the Upstate New York from the 1950s to the 1960s, despite some tragic circumstances for Ruthie, requiring her to abandon her family farm and let Ruth be the main provider as an English teacher, their relationship remains loving and solid. In these closeted days together they serve the church, the public-school system, and their community, much beloved by all who know them.

The book is written thoughtfully and carefully, never resentful in its tone; but rather, full of logical considerations according to the dictates of society grappling with its cultural shifts and dynamism. It does emphasize strongly, how embracing their faith in God enabled them to weather through the hypocrisy and lack of social support.

More importantly, the author points out that the book “addresses head on, how theology has been twisted to hate LGBTQ people, and how narrowly the Bible has been read to preclude LGBTQ people from God’s intended creation.”

“The Two Ruths” will be displayed in the upcoming Word on the Street, the biggest literary event in Canada this year on September 14 in Halifax.
