Women Can Take Their Shots Too
Eclipsing expectations and defeating troubles get emphasized in memoir
As society’s tide slowly turns to equality for everyone, women are rising above societal expectations and are now occupying roles and positions that weren’t previously available to them. The Most Unlikely Champion documents one athlete’s rise to success.
The memoir follows the personal and professional journey of pistol-shooting champion Vera Koo. Life for the eight-time Bianchi Cup titleholder hasn’t always been a smooth-sailing one. Growing up in a traditional Chinese household, she was expected to follow in her family’s footsteps and adhere to their culture. That meant becoming a wife who would submissively defer to her husband.
Koo also suffered professional and personal tragedies she wasn’t sure she’d overcome. However, she was able to come out on top and break age, race, gender, and cultural barriers; she became her own woman through her drive and humility. She credits her faith in God for keeping her strong throughout her struggles. Koo hopes her memoir can become a voice for women everywhere. Although she specifically wishes for this, she wants her story to reach men as well, as she believes that there is a champion within everybody.
Readers and professional book reviewers alike gave positive receptions. Kirkus Reviews acknowledges that while those familiar with Koo’s career will be especially interested in the memoir, any reader can still relate to it due to displays of her humanity shown in the chapters. The review describes the entire read as an “intriguing account with insights into competition and control.”
The Most Unlikely Champion reminds everyone, men and women alike, that rising above stereotypes and societal dictates is possible. Be inspired and buy a copy from selected online bookstores.
