Grant awarded to Honolulu Theatre for Youth

The $30,000 grant from Kaiser Permanente Hawaii supports productions to teach lessons on health and well-being.

HONOLULU – WEBWIRE

Kaiser Permanente Hawaii has awarded a $30,000 community benefit grant to Honolulu Theatre for Youth for 3 original theater productions: “SHH,” “Love,” and “The Carp Who Would Not Quit.” The grant will allow HTY to offer performances for underserved students statewide in partnership with Head Start and the Hawaii State Public Library System.

Theater has long been used as a platform for education, raising awareness of public health issues and inspiring people to make healthy choices. HTY’s productions teach children ranging from 2 to 8 years old about the importance of listening, respect, kindness, persistence, resiliency, and self-efficacy. Additional interactive workshops organized by HTY and held at Head Start locations aim to connect families, teachers, and students to community resources and encourage conversations related to physical, behavioral, and emotional wellness. Since 2011, Kaiser Permanente has awarded more than $200,000 in total grants to HTY, which has enabled the organization to reach more than 20,000 teachers, families, and students every year.

“Building healthier communities starts with giving our keiki (children) the resources they need to thrive,” said Dave Underriner, president of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals, Hawaii Region. “We’re proud to support HTY’s efforts to engage students through educational theater, giving them the social and emotional tools they need to make better health choices.”

“Our longstanding partnership with Kaiser Permanente allows us to bring theater productions and educational resources to thousands of students,” said Becky Dunning of Honolulu Theatre for Youth. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to use theater as a way to communicate with children and have important conversations about health and wellness.”
