Nikon Corporation (Nikon) is pleased to announce the winners of the Nikon Photo Contest 2018-2019. The Nikon Photo Contest, first held in 1969, is one of the largest photo competitions in the world.

This year, the Nikon Photo Contest celebrates its 50th anniversary, and is the 37th edition of the competition. Entries were accepted in three categories with corresponding themes.

Category                                                               Theme

Open:  single photo, photo story                       ’Change’
Next Generation:  single photo, photo story    ’Identity’

A record 97,369 entries across all three categories were received from approximately 33,000 people from 170 countries and regions around the world.

The winners were selected by an international panel of judges who are active in a variety of fields, with world-renowned art director Neville Brody serving as Lead Judge. Winners of the gold, silver, and bronze awards from each category were selected based on a variety of aspects, including their suitability to the category’s theme, the strength of the message, and level of creativity. In addition, one submission will receive the Participants’ Choice Prize and another will receive the Nikon Photo Contest 50th Anniversary Prize, a new prize which is implemented this year.

The Grand Prize winner, which was selected from among Gold Prize winners in each category, will be announced at the awards ceremony to be held in Tokyo on August 23, 2019.

Lead Judge Neville Brody’s summary of the Nikon Photo Contest

“This competition asks a lot of questions. One of the main questions it asks is ”what is the role of photography in the future?“ Photography changes in our lives. It’s in all of our phones. It’s everywhere we look. It’s in publishing. Our world has seen more in images than words these days. It’s an international language and it changes and influences the way we are as people and as a society. So, I think photography can only become more important and more significant. I think the variety in the works that have made it through to the awards, the narratives, the connections, and the surprises I think will make a really interesting debate about the world we live in and how we view it,” commented Lead Judge Neville Brody.
