Excellent and interesting voyage through his life. The photos add so much to the narrative. Well done. - Amazon Review

The book, “Farmer’s Son, Military Career” by Clarence “Skip” Vold is a culmination of his 30-years of dutiful service to the United States Air Force. It offers simple and emotional entertainment, telling and thriller-filled narrative, and at the heart of it, love for family whatever the circumstances.

There are similar books, but author Clarence Vold is compelling in this memoir of a military career, achieving the highest enlisted grade in the Air Force. It wasn’t what his Father wanted, but inspired by the magnetism of then US President John F. Kennedy, he refused to be held back.

The result was a wakened passion, a bite of the travel bug that the Air Force provided, and a narrowly-avoided disaster in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam War.

As dutiful as the author was to his career, so is his vivid detailing of the events in his life that he recalls in poignant revelations. He mentions turning five-years old when the battle in Iwo Jima, Japan was ongoing. In the same breath, he delivers an empathy to a situation in war-torn Europe, an innocence corrupted, but shows the family values learned and shared.

This storytelling is largely present throughout the book, never mind the military jargon, because it makes it obvious that the gratitude for life, the second chances and the failures that transformed him all made up for an experience non-comparable in his lifetime. The pictures that come in the book tug at your heartstrings, especially of the author’s beloved dog, Cindy.

Thus, from the plains of South Dakota, where blizzard conditions can hold one hostage in their own yard, to the mighty ships that patrol the oceans, read how the “Farmer’s Son, Military Career” began, endured and enjoyed life that throws curve balls.

“Farmer’s Son, Military Career” was/will be displayed in the upcoming Word on the Street, the biggest literary events in Canada this year on June 9 in Saskatoon, September 14 in Halifax, on September 21 in Lethbridge, and lastly on September 22 in Toronto.
