How Hungry Brains Work: “They Don’t”
Dr. Augustine pinpoints what may be a missing cause in learning and behavior
“Since the brain is the busiest organ in the body, working even as we sleep, it requires a vast amount of nutrients flowing through it moment by moment to function optimally.” - Susan Augustine, Author
In the American society, going to school hungry in America is all too common among students. According to The Washington Post, over 13 million kids across the country go to school hungry.
Sue Augustine, Ph.D. seeks to promote eating properly in her book, “The Hungry Brain: The Nutrition/Cognition Connection.” She discusses food allergies, childhood obesity, malnutrition of the brain, glucose dysregulation, mineral deficiencies as missing components that are involved in learning and behavior.
“Since the brain is the busiest organ in the body, working even as we sleep, it requires a vast amount of nutrients flowing through it moment by moment to function optimally,” Augustine writes. She further explains the red flags of malnutrition of the brain and how to take the best action to encourage healthy eating and regular exercise.
Augustine simplifies foods into three categories: plant foods, animal foods, and junk foods. She discusses in detail the effects of food substances that enter the body, most especially the brain.
“The Hungry Brain: The Nutrition/Cognition Connection” is part of Augustine’s project in promoting health awareness to parents and the academe. She focuses on a child’s brain development in association with food.
Susan Augustine’s “The Hungry Brain: The Nutrition/Cognition Connection” was featured during the five-day event at the American Library Association Annual Meeting & Exhibits held at the Washington State Convention Center, Seattle, Washington.
