A suspenseful book for readers who expect more from a paranormal thriller!

“Go Ask the Dead” (ReadersMagnet; 2019) by Frank Tropea is a paranormal thriller unlike any other. It is an impressive second book for the author, a paranormal enthusiast to boot.

“Since I was a little kid, when Halloween was always more important to me than Christmas, I’ve always been intrigued by the paranormal,” said Tropea during his guesting in the program This Week in America with Ric Bratton, “by the possibility of ghost hauntings, poltergeist activity, things of that nature. I’ve always been intrigued and later on in my adult years, I studied the paranormal.”

Readers can tell by how the narrative goes that indeed, “Go Ask the Dead” is more than just what a paranormal fan can pick up from the bookstore. Unlike most paranormal thrillers, Tropea’s work does not depend on jump scares but on a combination of a few elements that make the book a page-turner and all the way to the end.

For one, the novel is a Gothic tale of a beautiful young girl in a haunted land of Civil War and slavery. And another, the protagonist Amanda Mannon is descended from the English King, Charles II. These, among other in “Go Ask the Dead,” help to increase the popular appeal of history in fiction.

The novel also happens to be a cross between family (tragedy) drama and coming-of-age story. The gifted psychic Amanda does not know who her father was, and her mother emotionally neglects her and shuts her aside, leaving her in the care of a black maid. After her mother’s death and killing her stepfather (evil stepfather trope in use) in self-defense, Amanda was placed in a home for troubled adolescents before being sent to live with a maternal aunt who tried to convert her to the Catholic faith.

Indeed, unlike most paranormal thrillers, “Go Ask the Dead” bursts with steamy scenes, something to look forward for readers who like stories that go too far. Of course, this novel is unlike any other.

Frank Tropea’s “Go Ask the Dead” abounds with book to movie potential for moviemakers who dare exploit it and for movie buffs eager for a great new story.
