Hearst Newspapers’ Texas Community Group Announces New Leadership
Clarice Touhey Named President; Mark Adkins Appointed Chairman
Hearst announced today that Clarice Touhey has been named president of the Texas Community Group for Hearst Newspapers. She succeeds Mark Adkins, who, having served as the publisher of Beaumont Enterprise since 2013, will assume the role of chairman of Hearst Newspapers’ Texas Community Group. The announcement was made by Hearst President and CEO Steven R. Swartz and Hearst Newspapers President Jeff Johnson. The changes take effect July 22.
In her new role, Touhey, who will report to Johnson, will oversee the print and digital revenue operations for Hearst’s portfolio of community newspapers across the state. Previously, Touhey served as senior group publisher for Gatehouse Media where she was responsible for the operational, strategic and financial success of the company’s 13 publications in the Louisiana and North Texas regions. Her career spans creative, publishing and advertising roles at companies including the South Florida Sun Sentinel and Newsday.
Commenting on the announcement, Johnson said: “Clarice’s experience in leading a regional media group, along with her advertising background, will ensure that Hearst Newspapers’ Texas Community Group continues to thrive and best serve their readers and marketing partners.”
“I am excited to join the Texas Community Group, helping to oversee some of the most influential brands in local communities across the state,” Touhey said. “Hearst Newspapers’ reach throughout Texas is unparalleled, and the trust that readers have in the quality and integrity of the journalism that these papers deliver is vital to the strength of the region.”
Prior to being named publisher of Beaumont Enterprise, Adkins served as president of San Francisco Chronicle from 2008 to 2013. He joined Hearst Newspapers in 2005 as senior vice president of advertising. Previously, he worked at Gannett Co., Inc. for more than 23 years, holding executive positions including vice president of advertising, where he was responsible for strategic oversight of 90 U.S. local daily newspapers.
“Mark has been a strong leader for Beaumont Enterprise and the larger Hearst Newspapers community group in Texas,” Johnson said. “We appreciate him taking on this new role and supporting Clarice during the transition.”
Hearst strengthened its deep connection to local communities across Texas with its 2016 acquisition of the Houston Community Newspapers & Media Group, adding coverage in over 25 communities to the Hearst Newspapers portfolio, which already included the Houston Chronicle, San Antonio Express-News and Beaumont Enterprise, among others.
With more than 3,000 employees across the nation, Hearst Newspapers publishes 24 dailies and 52 weeklies. It also operates digital marketing services and directories businesses under the LocalEdge brand.
Touhey and her family are looking forward to returning to Texas and will reside in Nederland.
