Henry Callahan’s quote about experience being life’s best teacher aligns well with Bauer’s story. “God and I and Elvis is a true account of experiences which include life-changing divine directives which made an excellent venue (my life) for learning, growing, and maturing,” the mother of seven says.

Life’s lessons can be learned either the easy or hard way. It is up to people how to take and apply them in their lives. God and I and Elvis is writer Ilona Bauer’s journey of growth as she learns from her hardships.

The autobiography talks about Bauer’s personal battles as an adult. It sees her move around from one place to another—from Bavaria, to New York, Tennessee, and to Mississippi. Despite this, the memoir’s synopsis states that it is beyond a travelogue.

Bauer’s memoir first recalls her encounter and subsequent devotion to the King of Rock and Roll himself, Elvis Presley. She discovers that the musician’s lifestyle clashes with her Protestant beliefs. This pushes her to transfer to Memphis, Tennessee; she marries an Elvis wannabe and has four children with him. Unfortunately, this union, would not end on a happy note. However there was this second marriage vastly more unfortunate than the first and resulting in 3 more children and lasting 20 years.
