Cancer memoir by Ed and Loretta Williamson gets reviewed by BlueInk Review

How does one hold onto faith in the midst of cancer? Does God really care when a loved one is diagnosed with cancer, and if He does, how? The Williamsons’ battle with cancer began when in 1992 when Loretta discovers a lump in her breast, on the night before she underwent a hysterectomy. When the doctor confirmed the diagnosis of cancer, the news shook the couple and tested their faith.
 
For most cancer victims and their spouses and families, that should have been it. However, Ed and Loretta refused to resign themselves to the symptoms of the diseases and blame God for their predicament. Instead, they took it as an opportunity to deepen their relationship with God.
 
Ed uses their experience to frame a discussion of divine healing, details the medical methods that helped his wife, and narrates events that led to God’s miraculous intervention to erase cancer. Of course, the narrative puts emphasis on faith.
 
“Cancer does not determine our daily interchange with people and living life to the fullest,” said Dr. Williamson. “Once the smallest measure of trust is placed in Christ, we can say, ‘Lord, I do not understand Your ways, but You know the way for me.’”
 
“I am more concerned about my quality of life than I am about the quantity,” Loretta told her physicians. “I am leaving that in God’s hands.”
 
While Loretta is listed as co-author, it is unclear how much she personally contributed beyond the opening chapter about her childhood. BlueInk Review describes Ed’s work as “perfectly edited, organized and full of biblical evidence to support his claims.”

About the Author
 
A native of Parkersburg, West Virginia, Dr. Ed Williamson knew he was called to ministry when he was only a teenager. He followed that vision to Teen Challenge, a ministry to drug addicts in New York City, where he met Loretta. She became his wife and loving partner in ministry for forty-two years.
 
An accomplished teacher, Loretta earned a BS in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Special Education from Fitchburg State University (Massachusetts) and an MA in Early Education from West Virginia University. Ed earned his BA from Asbury University, his MRE from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, Masters of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary, and his Doctor of Ministry from Boston University School of Theology.
 
Together Ed and Loretta planted Covenant Evangelical Methodist Church in Morgantown, WV, serving there for fourteen years. As forerunners of expanding daycare facilities into early childhood education schools on Fox Street, Bronx, NY, they also founded Covenant Christian School. Beginning as a preschool, under the leadership of Loretta CCS became a thriving, fully functioning K-8 Christian school which continues to influence generations for Christ. Through the ministry of their church new church plants in North Central, West Virginia was planted.
 
Ed now lives in Indianapolis, IN, along with his wife Gilda, and continues to serve as International General Superintendent/Bishop of the Evangelical Methodist Church at the International Headquarters.
