Wärtsilä to supply 52 MW CHP plant to Tarasovskoye oil field in Russia

WEBWIRE

29 November 2006 - Wärtsilä Corporation has been awarded a contract to supply a 52 MW gas-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant to the Tarasovskoye oil field in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District of the Tyumen region in Western Siberia. The contract marks Wärtsilä’s first CHP project of over 50 MW in Russia and the first-ever power plant for the Russian state-owned oil company Rosneft, one of the top ten oil producers in the world.

The contract was signed in November with OOO “Energotech”, Russia, a turnkey contractor to Rosneft-Purneftegaz, a 100%-owned subsidiary of Rosneft. The power plant will comprise six Wärtsilä 20V34SG engines with heat recovery, running on associated gas from the oil well. In addition, Wärtsilä will deliver the power plant building.

The power plant equipment will be delivered between October and December 2007 and the gas power plant will be fully operational in the spring of 2008 supplying heat and power to the oil field’s production facilities.

Owned by Rosneft, the Tarasovskoye oil field was discovered in 1967 but first production did not begin until 1986. The average single well production rate amounted in 2005 to 27.5 tons per day, accounting for 23% of Rosneft-Purneftegaz’s total production.

Rosneft selected a Wärtsilä gas engine-based power plant over a conventional gas turbine arrangement due to its flexible load and operational characteristics. The gas engines also tolerate fuel quality variations and therefore are suitable for oil field power generation.

Other advantages which the Wärtsilä CHP plant will bring to the customer include high efficiency, low emissions and the ability to reduce flaring because the associated gas will be used for the generation of power and heat instead. As the Tarasovskoye field is located in Western Siberia, Wärtsilä’s extensive experience in Arctic areas also played an important part in the customer’s decision.
