Summer Programs for Families, Kids, and Teens at the Guggenheim Museum

Programs for families, kids, teens, and school groups,  are presented in conjunction with Artistic License: Six Takes on the Guggenheim Collection, the first artist-curated exhibition to be presented at the Guggenheim Museum, as well as The Hugo Boss Prize 2018: Simone Leigh, Loophole of Retreat, and Basquiat’s “Defacement”: The Untold Story.

Now open seven days a week with evening hours on Tuesdays and Saturdays, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum celebrates 60 years as an architectural icon, continuing to inspire generations of visitors as a unique “temple of spirit” where radical art and architecture meet. From June 18 through September 3, the museum is open until 9 pm on Summer Tuesdays, offering music and refreshments in the rotunda in addition to exhibitions on view in the galleries.

FOR FAMILIES

Second Sunday Family Tours
Sundays, July 14, August 11, September 8, and October 13, 10:30 am–12 pm

Families with children ages 5 and up
On the second Sunday of every month, the Guggenheim offers family tours that incorporate conversation and creative, hands-on gallery activities while exploring the exhibitions on view. These museum educator–led tours are organized around a single theme and highlight artworks from the Guggenheim’s permanent collection and special exhibitions.

July 14: Big and Small
See how artists work on different scales.

August 11: Curating the Collection
Celebrate 60 years of the Guggenheim Museum by exploring Artistic License: Six Takes on the Guggenheim Collection, which features nearly 300 works selected by six contemporary artists.

September 8: Material World
Investigate how artists experiment with a variety of materials to create their work.

October 13: A Home for Art
The Guggenheim Museum opened 60 years ago, as a space to house the art collection of Solomon R. Guggenheim. Explore artworks that seem at home here.

Stroller Tours
Tuesdays, July 16, August 13, September 10, and October 8, 3–4 pm

Caregivers with children up to 24 months
Interactive, stroller-friendly tours of current exhibitions led by museum educators, featuring touchable objects, art-making, and great adult conversation.

$25 per stroller, free for Family Members and Cool Culture families. Advance registration required, includes tour plus museum admission for one stroller (single strollers and front baby carriers only) and up to four adults. Little Guggs
Wednesday, September 4; Sunday, September 22; and Wednesday, October 2, 11 am–12 pm

Caregivers with children ages 2–4
This program is designed for little art lovers and their parents or guardians. In each session, children and their parent or guardian explore one or two works on view and then make a related art project in our studio. The hour includes a trip to the galleries, art-making activities, and more.

$30 per family, $15 members, free for Family Members and Cool Culture families. Includes admission, art materials, and snacks. Registration required at guggenheim.org/familyprograms.

FOR KIDS

Summerscapes Art Camp
Monday–Friday, June 24–28, July 15–19, July 22–26, and July 29–August 2, 9:30 am–4 pm

Students entering grades 3–5
This five-day camp features discussions and activities that foster creativity and critical thinking. Each session includes guided explorations of the museum’s Frank Lloyd Wright–designed building and special exhibitions, followed by hands-on, interactive workshops where campers create their own works of art. These individual and collaborative art-making projects encourage participants to experiment with various mediums and methods, including painting, sculpture, collage, and digital media. The week concludes with a small exhibition for kids to share their creations with family and friends.

Summerscapes Art Camp

Students entering grades 6–8

Teen Course: Find the Forgery
Nine sessions, July 8–19, 1–4 pm

Students entering grades 10–12
Designed especially for high school students, this dynamic two-week program offers an introduction to the world of art conservation and demonstrates the application of science to art history. Guided by museum conservators, curators, and educators, young people will explore the galleries, conduct hands-on work in the lab, and examine works of art from the museum’s permanent collection and the exhibition Artistic License: Six Takes on the Guggenheim Collection. Participants will perform close observation and scientific analysis to distinguish a forgery from an authentic work of art. The program concludes with presentations by students for their friends and families.

Guggenheim Teens
Academic Year (October 2019–May 2020)

Teens in grades 9–12
Energetic and outgoing high school students are invited to apply to the Guggenheim Teens program. With guidance from adult staff and volunteers, participants in Guggenheim Teens liaise with families at our Family Activity Kiosk in the lobby and facilitate gallery activities in the Open Studio program. Throughout the semester, teens attend a series of workshops about the museum profession.

FOR SCHOOL GROUPS

These guided programs are facilitated by museum educators. All programs accommodate students with special needs. Guggenheim for All: Reaching Students on the Autism Spectrum

Sketching materials are available for loan at the Family Activity Kiosk to explore by hand Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural shapes and spaces.

Museum Hours: Open daily from 10 am–5:30 pm, Tuesdays and Saturdays extended hours until 8 pm. From June 18 to September 3, open Tuesdays until 9 pm. On Saturdays, beginning at 5 pm, the museum hosts Pay What You Wish.
