Fostering roots and growth in Guyana

Nestled on the northern coast of South America, Guyana is home to a vibrant ecosystem. Among other wonders, it boasts the world’s largest single-drop waterfall and millions of acres of pristine rainforest teeming with unique flora and fauna, like the recently discovered blue tarantula.

Helping to conserve this unique ecosystem are environmental organizations like the Iwokrama International Centre, which works with indigenous communities, government agencies and local stakeholders to protect – and, in some areas, sustainably utilize – its namesake forest. This dedication to conservation is influencing the country’s economic expansion, which has been spurred in recent years by 13 offshore discoveries.

That’s why ExxonMobil supports the work of Iwokrama’s Science Committee, an ongoing project designed to study Guyana’s rainforest and unique biodiversity, which covers roughly 75 percent of the country.
