“We’re hoping to deal with people who are on the beginning of their journey with stress, but we certainly want to help people who are in real tough shape, as well.”

Recently released agricultural census data shows that an increasing number of women have taken a more active role in the operation and decision making on the nation’s farms and ranches. With that expanded role comes an added level of stress and anxiety as they face myriad challenges such as slumping commodity prices, rising input costs, effects of international trade wars and adverse weather conditions.

On Episode 12 of Fastline Fast Track, Doris Mold, president of Minnesota-based Sunrise Agricultural Associates, shared some resources available to help women in agriculture manage stress and anxiety.

A series of webinars were developed by Sunrise Agricultural Associates, in partnership with American Agri-Women, the University of Minnesota Women’s Ag Network, District 11 Agri-Women and the Upper Midwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center.

“The reason why we’re focused on women is that women often are ignored when it comes to talking about ag stress, and women play an integral role in agriculture, especially on farms and ranches,” said Mold, a dairy farmer and immediate-past president of American Agri-Women. “If the woman of the family goes down and is having issues, she can’t be there to support everybody else.”

The series of 90-minute webinars, found at www.americanagriwomen.org/webinars and umash.umn.edu in the “Stress and Mental Health” section, focus on topics such as “Anxiety, Depression and Coping Skills;” “Impact of Farming and Ranching Stress for Women 101” and “Suicide and the Agriculture Way of Life: What You Need to Know.” The partners plan to produce additional live webinar sessions later this year, and will expand into live chats on social media.

“Our people we have working with us are trained social workers who both have backgrounds in agriculture, so they really connect well with our agriculture audience,” Mold added. “We’re hoping to deal with people who are on the beginning of their journey with stress, but we certainly want to help people who are in real tough shape, as well.”

Joining Mold on Episode 12, Tom Oswald, a director of the United Soybean Board and farmer from Iowa, talks about the soy checkoff’s new “Tech Toolshed,” which helps soybean farmers make better use of their technology and data.

Also on the episode, Linda Rader, general manager of Franklin, Tennessee-based Iron Solutions™ and Bill Howard, founder and CEO of Fastline Media Group, talk about a unique partnership that will bring greater depth to the Fastline.com Price Comparison Tool™ and help equipment buyers and owners better understand what a piece of equipment is worth.
