Two Chinese students win once-in-a-lifetime London experience

Sile Li and Keke Zhang will travel to the capital to embark on an exciting, fully-funded summer school course at two of London’s most renowned universities.

Study London, the Mayor of London’s official university guide, has announced the winners of its first ever Summer School competition to encourage more Chinese students to experience a world-class education in the UK capital. 

The London Summer Schools campaign aims to promote short-term summer courses to Chinese students, giving two lucky winners a fully-funded educational adventure to London.  

Sile Li, 21, from Guangdong province is currently studying at Guangzhou Medical University, and has won a free place on the Revolutions in Biomedicine Summer Programme at Imperial College London (1 – 26 July 2019). “I have always dreamed of studying at Imperial College and I was so shocked to be chosen” explains Li. “London is a charming city and I love its prosperity and liveliness. I feel like all the universities that I am longing for are in London, which makes it even more appealing to me.” 

Keke Zhang, 22, from Zhengzhou in Henan province is studying at Beijing Forestry University, and will enjoy a fully-funded place on the English Plus City Photography course at University of the Arts London (UAL) (15 - 26 July 2019). Zhang said: “London is the ‘sacred site’ to English majors like me around the globe with its rich culture and heritage. I have no doubt that the higher education in London is the best – just look at all of the top universities there are across the city!” 

Both students will also receive: 

  • Return flights to London with Beijing Capital Airlines
  • Accommodation at an Urbanest property in central London for the duration of the stay 
  • An online Aspire Account by Unizest with spending money. 
  • Two London Passes for tourist attractions across London 
  • ‘Afternoon Tea’ experience for the winner and one guest at The Landmark London hotel 


China remains London’s largest student market, growing by 89.6% since 2011/12 with a current total of 21,350 undertaking studies in the capital. Since 2016/17, student numbers from China have increased by 20% - making it one of the fastest growing student markets into London*.

Our Revolutions in Biomedicine Summer School encompasses a wide range of biomedicine subjects and is delivered at undergraduate level.  We welcome applications from undergraduate, recently graduated and postgraduate students. We are unable to accept applications from students who are under 18 years old or have not started an undergraduate degree.

About UAL and English Plus City Photography course 

University of the Arts London (UAL) offers an extensive range of courses in art, design, fashion, communication and performing arts. UAL Language Centre offers English Plus courses which combine English language with practical introductory art, fashion, design and media courses. English Plus City Photography combines photography skills with English and you will learn how to capture city life on camera. This course will take you out and about all over London with your camera. You will be taught the history and context for street photography as well as technical tips and tricks. By the end of the course you will know what makes some photos so exceptional. This course will include: 

  • 15 hours of General English tuition per week 
  • 15 hours of City Photography per week 
  • Candid images using hidden or unobtrusive cameras 
  • Abstract images - images from the environment, its surfaces, textures and colours
  • Photo essays and portrait techniques, taking pictures of people to tell a story 
  • Adjusting pictures in Photoshop such as retouching and creating a distinctive style 
  • Editing and presenting images efficiently and effectively to present your work. 
  • Regular tutorials and reviews 
  • Free Wi-Fi access across all UAL sites 
  • Independent study facilities 
  • Insurance 
  • Certificates of attendance from the Language Centre and London College of Communication.
